Beaut image. No one really knows how it was built or for what purpose. The Druids commandeered it, but despite their claims they knew little of the earth's secrets or of the Summer or Winter Solstice. If they had witnessed the floating capstones they would have run screaming for their lives.

lovely shot, love the sky in this one,....
I have been once. I took my friend who came over from Canada to see it
and I drove passed it since the new road and managed to get a shot from the road
a few years ago, it is always nice to see.

It's not so easy to get close up's of this since they roped it off. :( Nice shot.

I said that wrong.  I was actually on the proper side of the rope. :)

It was my first visit and I was hoping it was better with people bused in like this with the old road closed and rerouted.  I've seen photos of the old way with the car park across the road.  I'm afraid that if Stonehenge were in the US it would have been trashed a long time ago with a laser light show and a 3D "Stonehenge Experience".

I didn't visit Avebury.  But I've "driven" thru on Google maps.  I will go one day, I hope.

Ooops, sorry, could be I read your message wrong. :ashamed:
Even so, as a "pilgrim" from oversea's, I still think it sad you had to stay behind a rope. ;) This should be a hands on experience. It is an extremely ancient spiritual place for Pagan peoples the World over and folk come for many reasons, not only as spectators.
Its not the same since the old road was closed. The A303 is chaos now and the old road was an ancient one...how dare they ! :giggle: When I travel to the south-west I go overnight now.
If you are interested in similar aged unspoiled ancient sites here I will point you at them. Wiltshire is full of them (some in farmers fields, practically undiscovered !) and Somerset too, and north west Scotland. Henges and barrows and burial mounds and engravings on stones on hillsides (cup and ring marks, specially up North) These are the special places one can be alone with the ancestors and get a proper feel of the ancient landscape and their place in it which they respected.
If thats you cup of tea. (as we say) ;)
Love your shot of Stone Henge tho. Great job of our best known Pagan "catherdral".
